In this observational study designed to examine the compliance of patient companions and visitors with hand hygiene, the majority of the companions reported that handwashing was very important in the prevention of diseases. Handwashing is one of the most important and easily applicable measures to prevent healthcare-associated infections. 74.6% of the companions stated that hand washing was very important in preventing diseases.

89.5% of the patient companions did not report a skin condition that made it difficult to wash their hands whereas 96.2% reported that they did not receive training on the importance of hand washing. The mean hospital stay of the patients was 5 days. The majority (95.2%) were companions 83.7% were female, and the mean age was 43.3☑4.4 years.
